Role: Game Designer
Medium: Card Game
Team Size: 1
Duration: 1 Month
This is an early Game Design project from my time at Full Sail University where we were tasked with documenting a new game concept using a GDD format. We then took a week to playtest and modify the game based on feedback. In our final week of this project we once again modified the game based on feedback, but were also required to replace a major game mechanic with something new.
Project Goals
- Rapidly designed and prototyped a card game using a non-standard deck of cards.
- Gained experience with creating a Game Design Document.
- Conducted playtests and use player feedback to iterate on the design through a series of 1-week sprints.
- Adjusted to an unexpected shift in game requirements.
Overview
I prototyped this game with basic land cards from Magic The Gathering and wrote the numbers in with sharpie. The game was intended to be a loosely inspired by Gin Rummy and Settlers of Catan. I wanted to create a unique social dynamic in the game that tested player’s perceptions of advantage – this idea was inspired by a 4-player game of magic I’d recently played where the player who seemed at a disadvantage was just maneuvering and managed to sneak a win at the last minute through cleverness instead of brute force.
